Imagine transporting a brash young cosmetologist from the 21st Century back to 1801 London. Then throw in a murder plot, sprinkle in female buddies and love interests all around. The result is a book that's great fun. Pearson's debut novel has a few major strengths. First and foremost, is her main character, Penny, the cosmetologist who is magically transported from 2015 to 1801. Penny is unapologetically brash and bold. Not wild off-the-chain, but "spirited." Readers are privy to Penny's unfiltered thoughts which are both amusing and a great way to continuously remind us that, even as Penny's exterior evolves to meet the standards of 1801 where she's stuck, she remains a 21st Century girl. The Penny character carries this book. The second strength of this book is its uniqueness. Pearson pulls off the time travel angle in a way that gets readers to be OK with it and not dwell on the details of how and why. The relationship between Penny and her 19th Century sidekick Alice seems very natural and love interests abound. I also enjoyed Pearson's descriptions of all things 1801. Overall, this is an engrossing work with fun and fascinating characters and a fresh approach to a book that's both whodunit and romantic fiction.Product details
